The Spindlers by Lauren Oliver

The SpindlersThe Spindlers by Lauren Oliver

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This was a book I found at my local Dollar Tree. It seems to be intended for pre-teens or younger teens as it had large spacing found in many books designed for younger readers. As such, it read very quickly for me (in a day).

It was very imaginative, with strange and familiar creatures, floating throughout the storyline. While goblins and lumer-lumpen are somewhat recognizable, troglods, nocturni, nids, and spindlers are somewhat new.

Spindlers are spider-like creatures, troglods are creatures of the Earth, Nids are silly and mob-like, and the Nocturni are the stuff of dreams, almost literally. Anyway, it was a nice, quick read, but I somehow expected more. More plot, more emotion, more description, more something. Oh well, it was a dollar, and I got at least that much of enjoyment out of it.

The Last Hunt by Bruce Coville

The Last Hunt (Unicorn Chronicles, #4)The Last Hunt by Bruce Coville

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Like the previous book – there is a lot going on here. The last hunt to destroy the unicorns has begun with Cara right in the middle of it. This time she’s going to see another dragon, Graumag. The hunters bent on destroying the unicorns are destroying Luster in the process, tremors shake the land.

The world is dying and only one being can heal it, but he is no where to be found. Cara is reunited with the group she lost and even rejoins her father her mother. In the end it takes all the inhabitants of Luster to save it.

I will honestly be rereading this series again, and probably a few times after that.

Dark Whispers by Bruce Coville

Dark Whispers (Unicorn Chronicles, #3)Dark Whispers by Bruce Coville

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

After finally finding a copy of the hardcover (this doesn’t exist in paperback) I devoured this book too. It is the third book in the series and there is a lot going on here in this book. It shows by how much bigger it is than the last two books in the series.

Continuing the plot in the magical land of Luster Cara is given the task of learning a story from the Chiron, leader of the centaurs. However, their trip does not go as planned. The group of five start out easily but soon enough the three unicorns, two humans, and dwarf are split into three groups each with their own objective as the plot to hunt and kill the unicorns thickens.

I’m fully tempted to go back and reread this book again as I said there are many things going on in this book. We find out about the rainbow prison, meet the mysterious Fallon, playful Rajiv, and the unpredictable dragon, Ebillan, as well as a handful of Centaurs.

Song of the Wanderer by Bruce Coville

Song of the Wanderer (Unicorn Chronicles, #2)Song of the Wanderer by Bruce Coville

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As with the first book in this series, I devoured this as a slightly older adolescent. The story continues on in the magical world of Luster. We meet more magnificent creatures and have more adventures as the plot thickens and becomes more mysterious.

Our heroine is Cara, a girl from Earth who has flung herself into another world to escape the man following her. Last book we met a unicorn, the Dimblethum, the Squijum, and the Delvers. This time we meet a dragon, the Chronicle Keeper, and a gryphon in the attempt to figure out just what exactly is going on in Luster.

This is my second or third time reading this book and I still enjoyed it. The magic has not dulled with this book either and I cannot recommend them enough for those who can still find them. I am not a big audiobook consumer, but the audio versions can still be found on Amazon.com.

Into the Land of the Unicorns by Bruce Coville

Into the Land of the Unicorns (Unicorn Chronicles, #1)Into the Land of the Unicorns by Bruce Coville

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As a teenager (and an adult) I liked unicorns, so my mother bought me this book, Into the Land of the Unicorns. One night I couldn’t sleep, found the book and read it all in one night. I was instantly hooked, and still am. It reads quicker now as an adult as it is more of a YA/children’s book, but I still love it.

I recently found the last two books in this series (they are hard to find, only in hardcover or audio files really) and wanted to reread the first two books before reading the last two (as a book lover does).

Rereading them as adult has not dulled the magic these books emitted as young teenager the first time I read them. I also mentioned these books the Thrice Read Tag I did on my blog and my statement there is true here. These are and will be my most reread books.

Collective Book Haul

It’s time for another little haul, from various places (not all of them stores). I’m really excited that I found the last two books in the Unicorn Chronicles series, I’ve had the first two books since I was in middle school (5th through 8th grades) so I’m very eager to get going on these. I found Ouija at the Dollar Tree, one of my favorite places to shop. The three cooking and food books came from my work’s book exchange thing that goes on in the break room.

Drs. Castelli and Griffin have filled this book with helpful tips and encouraging advice that will help you make the change to healthier eating. For those whose cholesterol levels aren’t moved by changes in diet alone, the doctors discuss the pros and cons of cholesterol- lowering medications.

From The Dollar Tree:

Ouija by Katharine Turner

“It’s not just a game.
As far as Elaine Morris is concerned, the Ouija board is just a game she played at sleepovers as a kid. But her best friend, Debbie, has been messing around with one recently–and claims she’s starting to hear strange noises around the house. ‘Laine thinks Debbie is a total dork for getting spooked, until Debbie dies in a horrible and haunting way. Desperate to figure out what really happened to her friend, ‘Laine starts using the Ouija board to uncover its mystery. She soon learns that something sinister has come through the board, and it’s not ready to say GOOD-BYE.
Read this heart-stopping novel before seeing the major motion picture!”
